On the whole, we discuss subjects on a large scale (averages) and on a small scale (individual experiences). We mix and weave these together to create narratives and convey our nuanced positions.
Before applying a critical lens, consider whether a point is an average OR an individual experience. Then decide on your approach to evaluating the merit and impact of the idea.
Some questions that can help:
- Does the idea comprise data from a large population?
- How are exceptions to the idea handled?
- Where does the concept fit in the larger narrative?
- Is the speaker describing what is, or are they predicting what may be?
- Does the idea logically follow from the speaker’s previous topic? How does it link to the next issue?
