To be human is to constantly wonder ”Who am I?” and “What should I be doing?” We begin with the potential to do nearly anything within our biological limits. But to grow as a person is to determine what we cannot or should not pursue. There are an infinite amount of amazing ideas and paths for us to follow. However, we can only fully explore a few.
As I grow as a professional, as a leader, and as a father, saying “no” simultaneously becomes more difficult and more important. Time and energy are the primary resources. Both are limited and draw boundaries around which realms we can truly excel. When I say “no,” it does not necessarily mean “I dislike your proposal.” More likely, this is my attempt to remain strategically focused on my own ability to succeed in a few chosen domains of my own life. One day, the season will change, and the “no” may transform into a “yes.” But do not count on it.
